Subject: TIME WARP!
That's a preview of my weekly's title line. It crazy that we get the
transfer news on Saturday! It feels like we were waiting for
Transfers just a week or two ago, but it has already been six weeks
since then! Time is flying by, Elder Sims and I are always marveling
at how quick it goes past us. Time flies when you are having fun!
How has the time been going for you guys? Does it feel like a long
time ago that we said by at the MTC? That feels like a long time ago,
but it also feels like just yesterday. Elder Sims last comp was my
MTC comp, so we talk about MTC things sometimes, which is why it feels
so recent I think. A few things I wanted to include in my email and
be sure you got.
1. I am doing great. The work is kind of slow, all the people we
teach either can't meet super often, or they have way too many
problems to progress. So most of our lessons with the latter are just
building foundations of faith so they can progress slowly. While the
people who don't have problems have a hard time keeping commitments
and appointments. The struggle is real, but it's not painful anymore,
I just pray more.
2. I bought another pair of insoles. Elder Thomas gave me a tie and
a pair of shoes when he left, the shoes are Ecco, which is a really
nice brand for durability and they look good, but they needed insoles,
so got a pair of four dollar insoles. I have also been running out of
socks to wear with my tan slacks, so I bought two pairs of tan socks.
These came off of my MSF card because I forgot to split the purchase,
but it might come off of my home card later in the week...
3. We play basket ball all the time here, we do it almost every
morning for our workout. The shoo goo was a nice solution for my
chucks, but it doesn't withstand the wear and tear of the court. I
have been wearing my solomons, and they are doing fine, but I want to
stop wearing them to basketball because I don't want to wear them out
too fast. I was wondering if I could maybe obtain a pair of sneakers
from goodwill or retails (thrift stores in my area) as my wear and
tear shoes. If you guys have any ideas, shoot them my way! Thanks
4. I discovered he things I wish I had done before I came out, the
only things I think will prepare anyone for a mission before they get
there. These things will not prepare fully, but they will put the
attention in places where I wish I was better.
A. Learn to play a few songs on the piano. We have district meetings
every week and when no one can play the piano, a Capella doesn't
really invite the spirit when no one can sing.
B. Get fit, hit he gym, get big, however you want to say it. I'm
sure it's different in other parts of the world, but here, we play a
lot of basketball and dodge ball. A lot. Like, every p-day. It's
all more fun if you can throw a ball and throw your weight around a
bit. I don't have much weight, or strength, or skill to throw down.
So I am kind of the worst ball player out of the Elders that play ball
😅. It would be more fun if I was better at it.
C. Spend time in the scriptures. We have an hour of personal study.
Every day except Sunday and Monday, because of that I have coke to
love the scriptures. Before my mission scripture study sucked because
it seemed purposeless to me. Now I need to know so I can share. If
you spend just 20 minutes to an hour every day, and find someone to
share the cool things with, then it becomes more fun. Even if that
someone is your family.
D. Practice prayer. Prayer is a big thing out here (go figure). It's
difficult to avoid vain repetition sometimes because of how often you
pray. You are also asked to give a lot of prayers. Practice praying,
the most powerful prayer I have very heard on my mission was Brother
Paxton, he is a super super old guy that we take out with us every now
and then and he is awesome. His prayers sound like he is talking
directly to God. Not just reciting words with a thought that maybe
there is somebody listening. It's amazing. So practice just Talking.
E. Seek correction and be humble enough to accept it. Dad, there is
an Elder here, Elder Petitta, that is a 20 year old version of you.
He is one of my Zone Leaders, and he gets after me for the same things
you do, he does it in a similar way, less lecture though, he has a lot
of the same opinions, every time he corrects my poor actions and bad
decisions, I can picture you standing there. So don't worry about me
on that front, God has blessed me with a leader who cares about me a
lot and teaches me in a way I understand. But it is difficult for me
to accept his correction and guidance sometimes because it comes in
the same way as from you, and we all know how good I am at listening
to you (sorry for that I am working on it). So the main thing for me
is to humble myself enough that I can learn and grow and become
better, it is a lesson I know you tried to teach me my whole life and
the mission is the catalyst I needed I guess.
Well, that's the list, some are deeper and more profound gab others,
but more than waking up early, more than Mission prep, more than all
the other tricks, those are the things I find most useful, maybe not
most important, but the MTC is good at important, just sometimes not
practical training.
Other things to be trained on
-Dogs, what to do with which breeds
-Doorbells versus knocking, what to do at what time
-People, who to talk to and who to cross to other side of the road when you see
-What to do when you bring an investigator to fast and testimony meeting
-Why people think proselyting is soliciting
-How to not appear like the FBI/Police (tan slacks usually do the trick)
-Which squirrels to scare away, and which ones to be scared by (Hannah
was right about the squirrels)
-What to do when your ZL wrecks his finger with a cheese grater on
accident (chastise him and get a needle and thread, and then laugh at
him when he freaks out and put antibiotic ointment and super glue and
a bandaid on, it was a deep cut)
